International English Language Testing System

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System is an English language assessment recognised by more than 6 000 organisations globally, including immigration authorities, universities, employers and professional bodies. The IELTS examination is designed to assess English language ability for individuals wishing to work or study in a native English-speaking country. This is a common visa requirement for South Africans wishing to work and study abroad as South Africa is not recognised as a predominantly English-speaking country.

Results are reported on a 9-point band score scale from 1 (non-user) to 9 (expert user). Candidates are assessed in four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. They are awarded a score for each skill as well as an overall band score. Candidates have a choice between two test formats: Academic and General Training. The Academic module is for candidates wishing to study at an undergraduate or postgraduate level, as well as those seeking professional registration. The General Training module is for those wishing to migrate to an English-speaking country or those wishing to study at below degree level. Both tests utilise the same listening and speaking tests, while the reading and writing tests differ depending on the module the candidate has registered for. The tasks and content for the reading and writing components in the Academic module focus on academic topics and skills, while the tasks and content for the General Training module are relevant to everyday life in an English-speaking country.

LEARN TO LINK is now offering an IELTS Preparation course for individuals wanting to take this examination. The course is offered on a one-to-one basis online via Zoom with one of LEARN TO LINK’s IELTS-qualified tutors. However, face-to-face lessons at the LEARN TO LINK office can be arranged if requested. Candidates will be asked to complete a baseline assessment and will thereafter be advised as to how many lessons will be needed to pass with their desired result. It is important that the candidate confirms which IELTS examination they are required to take before completing the baseline assessment so that an accurate recommendation may be made regarding their learning plan.

Please be advised that LEARN TO LINK’s IELTS Preparation course does not include examination registration, nor is the LEARN TO LINK office a registered IELTS examination centre. It is the candidate’s responsibility to register for and write the examination at an approved IELTS examination centre privately. Please visit the official IELTS website at https://www.ielts.org/ for further information on registering for an examination.
