Chanelle Peverett

English First/Home Language, Advanced Programme English, English Olympiad, TEFL

Chanelle Peverett has been registered as an Educator with the South African Council of Educators (SACE) since 1997. She studied at the University of Johannesburg where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education, specialising in languages (English, Afrikaans and Zulu). She has also obtained her Honours Degree in English. Chanelle has extensive experience in training English language and writing skills. This includes teaching English at various levels (Home/First language, First additional language and Advanced Programme English) in various curricula, including GDE, IEB and CAIE/Cambridge (IGCSE, AS and A Level). Annually, she trains Grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 students to write the National English Olympiad. Chanelle trains students from 9 different schools (GDE and IEB) to write the IEB Advanced Programme English examination in Grade 12. She is a Demartini Method® Facilitator and a Demartini Values® Facilitator and is qualified to use the Demartini Method® for individuals and groups. She runs Values Workshops for corporate companies and teaching staff in schools. She has attained her Senior Five Level in Speech and Drama from the Speech and Drama College of South Africa. She has extensive experience in training individuals for various public speaking competitions and has adjudicated several competitions. Important events require a dynamic speaker to set the tone for inspired excellence and achievement. Chanelle Peverett is a dynamic speaker with deep knowledge and insight on how to enthuse an audience.

Natasha Ferreira

English First/Home Language, Afrikaans (FAL), Advanced Programme English, TEFL

Natasha Ferreira is a PhD student at Stellenbosch University who has a passion for teaching and guiding young minds. She is a self-professed bibliophile whose special power is deciphering messy handwriting. She believes that any student can be taught to analyse given information and to communicate their thoughts in writing. Natasha has experience tutoring students in primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions. When she is not teaching English, she teaches violin and Ancient Greek. While studying towards her undergraduate degree at the University of Pretoria, she was named the top English Literature student of her year for two consecutive years. She has completed three degrees with distinction: BA Languages (with majors in English, Ancient Greek, and Philosophy), BA Hons in Ancient Languages and Cultures, and an MA in Ancient Languages and Cultures (with a focus on Ancient Greek).

Amour Parteka

Business Studies, Economics

Amour matriculated in 2012 and obtained her Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Pretoria in 2016, majoring in Business Management and Economics. In 2019, Amour made the decision to exit the corporate world and to pursue teaching. She has since gained experience with the IEB curriculum, teaching business studies and economics up to matric. She is currently completing her PGCE certification in order to expand upon her teaching qualifications. She hopes to pursue an Honour’s degree thereafter.

Amour took the decision to become a teacher because of her desire to share her passion for and knowledge of business studies and economics. Her aim is to help her students develop an analytical, critical and enquiring mind, which will equip them to make decisions based on facts and research.

Beyond the scope of her work as an educator, Amour has also achieved provincial colours as an equestrian. She has won many championships and was even approached by numerous organisations in Europe to further her equestrian career. Amour loves spending time with her family, walking her dogs, preparing delicious meals, and keeping up to date with local and international current affairs.

Bronwyn Thompson

All subjects at primary level

Bronwyn Thompson has her Honours degree in Psychology from University of South Africa. She has always had a passion for childhood development and learning. She has been teaching for 7 years now and finds it incredibly rewarding. She has a bubbly personality and will keep lessons fun and engaging.

Cherileigh van den Berg

English First/Home Language, TEFL, Afrikaans (FAL) First Language

Cherileigh is an artistic, passionate and engaging person and maintains a strong inclination towards all things creative. She has an A Level qualification in English, Afrikaans and Psychology, as well as a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification. She is currently pursuing a BA General degree with majors in English, Psychology, and Biology at the University of Johannesburg. In her spare time, she enjoys writing lyrics and poetry, and has a natural talent for creative writing. In addition, Cherileigh completed her toastmasters course in 2018. She does not see the world in an orthodox manner, and looks forward to helping her students reach their full potential.

Chrissie Nolte

Mathematical Literacy

Chrissie has been registered as an educator with the South African Council of Educators (SACE) since 1982. She studied at the University of Johannesburg, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science (Edu.), majoring in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. She has 40 years of teaching experience, having taught mathematics, mathematical literacy, natural sciences and physical sciences in both government and private schools. Chrissie is passionate about mathematics and has tutored many learners, helping them achieve better marks. She believes that a part of the challenge learners have with mathematics is the perception that it is a “difficult” subject – in this regard, she aims to change learners’ beliefs and to help them develop more positive feelings towards the subject. She is also passionate about helping learners with mathematical literacy, as she finds the subject to be helpful in developing a person’s numerical skills for everyday life.

Claude-Christelle Mbourou Baptiste Igueri 

French

Christelle is a native speaker of French from Gabon. She is passionate about languages and enjoys both learning and teaching them. She has completed a Bachelor’s degree in Modern-European Languages, majoring in English and French. Thereafter, she obtained her Honour’s degree in French. In addition to this, she has completed studies in African-European Cultural Relations and is currently pursuing a PhD in French. Christelle has taught at the University of Pretoria as an assistant lecturer and as a junior lecturer. She has experience teaching on multiple online platforms. Christelle believes that being an educator is an important duty. An educator constructs the future generation; thus, it is important that an educator not only teaches a subject but also teaches values to their students. 

Craig Slabbert

Mathematics, Mechanics, Physics

Craig completed his AS Level studies in 2018. Currently, he is in his final year of Electrical- and Electronic Engineering at the University of Johannesburg. His decision to pursue these studies stemmed from his interest in Robotics. In his free time, he helps out at 1st Discovery Scout Group, where he assists other young men in learning difficult and complex concepts.

Daymore Makope

Physics, Physical Science, Chemistry

I’m a Physics enthusiast at heart, with a zeal to share my knowledge of the field with the world. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics, and a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Physics. Both were completed at the University of Johannesburg, where I was a First Year Top Achiever and awarded the Top First Year BSc Physics Student Award in 2015. I have experience tutoring at high school and university level. I believe that Physics helps us to understand how the universe works. Therefore, I use practical examples and applications of concepts to make my students feel more comfortable and excited to study this seemingly unapproachable subject.

Debbie Kamang

History, Tourism, Afrikaans

Debbie Kamang has been registered with SACE (South African Council of Educators) since 1984 when she started her teaching career after studying for four years at the Edgewood College of Education. She later furthered her studies through UNISA to qualify to work with children with special needs. She spent the first 16 years of her teaching career working in a primary school and at a school for physically disabled young people. For the past 20 years, she has worked in a high school, teaching both the middle school and FET phase, and has been involved in marking final matric exams for the IEB for many years.  She has also done relief teaching at a remedial school. Her passions are children and young people, music, history and most importantly, her two sons, who are currently studying at university.

Debbie Meiring

Accounting, Business Studies, Economics

Deborah Meiring completed her degree in Management Accounting, and pursued a career in accounting and other financially based roles. She has over 20 years’ experience within this environment, and has a strong financial and business acumen. In addition to the above, she has worked with holiday rentals within the tourist industry, became licensed as a general tax practitioner, and taught and set up lessons voluntarily for a Sunday school. Above all, she values being a wife and mother to two teenage girls. She believes the sky is the limit for each student, with the right kind of guidance and enthusiasm, each child can reach their potential and not only enjoy subjects such as accounting, business and economics, but excel at them too!

Diane Greeff

Maths, Advanced Programme Maths (AP Maths), Statistics, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics

Diane Greeff has a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Mathematics and Statistics. She has always been passionate about numbers and achieved the mathematics subject prize at school in her matric year. She has been giving individual lessons for both mathematics and statistics since 2007. Diane enjoys passing on her knowledge to students and likes to explain things in simple terms so that the students understand each and every step. Her aim is to make each student as excited about numbers as she herself is.

Dr Dieter Leckel

Chemistry, TEFL

Dieter was born in Germany, studied chemistry in Aachen and completed his PhD in Technical Chemistry in 1994. The same year, he came to South Africa and was employed in the Research and Development department of Sasol until the end of 2019. During these years, he supported the company’s graduate development program and lectured young scientists and chemical engineers in the field of catalysis. After his professional career in the chemical industry, he worked as an English language editor and proofreader, supporting ESL writers publishing academic dissertations and scientific essays. He wholeheartedly supports knowledge transfer to assist young learners and students and help them develop critical thinking skills. And by the way, he believes that there is no such thing as a stupid question.

Dr Erica Makings

Biology, Physics, Chemistry

Erica Makings has a PhD (Med) in Biochemistry and Haematology and a Masters Degree in the Biological Sciences from the University of the Witwatersrand.  She has over fourteen years experience in teaching the CAPS and IEB syllabus for Life Sciences and Physical Sciences.  Over the years Erica has collaborated and contributed in writing textbooks for Siyavula (Life Sciences Grade 10, Physical Sciences Grade 10-12) and for Sasol Inzalo (Thunderbolt Kids Natural Sciences Grades 4 – 6 and Curious Minds Natural Sciences Grades 7 – 9).  Erica has 7 years experience in tutoring learners and is passionate about her subjects.  She believes in teaching learners how to think and not what to think.

Elaine van den Berg

Afrikaans

Elaine van den Berg studied at the Normaal Teachers’ Training College Pretoria (NKP – University of Pretoria) where she completed a Higher Diploma in Education in 1996 – cum laude.  She specialised in Pre- and Junior Primary, Remedial teaching, English and Afrikaans. She also has a TEFL qualification. Elaine has been involved in Youth training programmes for more than 30 years.  She believes that knowledge, accompanied by encouragement, become the fundamental keys in establishing self-confidence in any given situation – it is with this belief that she teaches her students. Elaine has been homeschooling her three children for the past fifteen years and she is a volunteer at The Earth Centre (Equine Assisted Programmes for children with disabilities and special needs).  During her free time, she enjoys reading, horse riding, hiking and bird watching.     

Henré van Rooy

Biology, Chemistry, Physics

Henré has always been passionate about the sciences – it is for this reason that he pursued a Bachelor of Science at The University of South Africa, where he majored in Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology. Throughout his studies, he has tutored students in a variety of subjects and has developed a passion for helping young minds understand and love the sciences. The writer Kurt Vonnegut once said, “Science is magic that works.” Henré tries to bring this magic to his classes with fun and interactive lessons.

Karish Naidoo

Biology, Chemistry

Karish Naidoo is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Pharmacy at TUT and previously studied towards a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree at WITS University. Through his studies, he developed a passion for the fields of biology and chemistry. He believes that, through one-on-one tutoring, the full academic potential of a student can be unlocked. Karish adopts a student-centred approach to teaching and is strongly motivated to ensure his students’ success. In his free time, Karish enjoys creating digital art, writing and animating

Kaylee Clark

Maths, Physics, Biology

Kaylee Clark has her Masters degree in Environmental Science from WITS University. She has always had a passion for kids and education, believing it to be a very rewarding endeavour. She changed careers in order to share her knowledge and enthusiasm for learning. Kaylee has been teaching and tutoring Mathematics and Science for over six years. She is outgoing, and enjoys Latin and Ballroom dancing as well as playing squash in her free time. Kaylee has a great desire to make a difference in young lives, and aims to instil confidence in all young minds.

Leandra Riley

Social Science, Geography, History, Business Studies

Leandra Riley is a devoted mom, wife and teacher. While she initially studied BA Food Science and Culinary Arts at The Hurst Campus, she quickly developed a passion for working in education and Financial Management. Her experience in education extends across various subjects and curricula (CAIE, IEB, and CAPS). She obtained her TEFL Certification to enhance her language teaching skills, and has teaching experience in Afrikaans FAL, Social Sciences (History and Geography) as well as English Home Language. At one point, she was assistant to the Angolan Cultural Attaché, and tutored the diplomats’ children. She has also done translation and editing for two publishers – AllCopy Publishers and most notably, Oxford University Press. Currently, Leandra is a Financial Advisor with Momentum and has recently written her RE5 examination.

Leslie Moloto

Maths, Physics

Leslie Moloto is an MEd candidate at UNICAF University. Previously, he obtained his BSc in Mining Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. Whilst working as a mining engineer, Leslie spent most of his afternoons tutoring which sparked his interest in and passion for education. He enjoys all activities related to education and has experience teaching Mathematics and Geography at high school level. Leslie also has extensive experience facilitating revision workshops for high school students. He believes every student can be empowered and guided to achieve their highest potential while enjoying the learning process, especially in Mathematics.

Liane McIntyre

History, English First/Home Language, TEFL

Liane McIntyre has been teaching for over 30 years. She graduated with distinction from JCE with a Higher Diploma in Education in 1987. In 2001, Liane obtained her Bachelor of Education Honours Degree with distinction from WITS. In 2014, she became a Certified Life Coach by being NLP certified. In 2020, she obtained her TEFL certification. Liane has both NSC and IEB experience and was the Head of Academics at St Ursula’s School (2014-2017) and IEB Matric marker for History (2009-2017).
Her teaching philosophy is to build relationships with her students based on mutual respect and trust. This sets the tone and creates a classroom atmosphere where students feel confident in sharing their strengths and addressing their weaknesses. In addition, she wants to give her students a greater level of independence and responsibility with regards to their work ethic. This allows students to control their own success through her guidance. Liane believes that young people have the ability to make great changes in the world if they are given the right information and tools. Her teaching strategy is to assist English and History students to reach their goals in life by providing the skills they need to be successful in an information literate society.

Lourentia Mostert

History, English First/Home Language, Afrikaans Home Language and TEFL

Lourentia Mostert has been registered as an Educator with the South African Council of Educators (SACE) since 1997. She studied at the University of Johannesburg where she obtained a B. Social Sciences (History, Ancient Studies and Political Studies) as well as B. Hon. Social Sciences (History and International Relations). Lourentia has 27 years of teaching experience in Government, Private schools and International Schools. She has been involved in Curriculum development and Regional Moderator for the Gauteng Department of Education. She has been a HOD History/ Music and Drama and the author of several History textbooks. Lourentia is also an experienced freelance curriculum content writer, editor and proof-reader (Oxford University; UOF and All Copy Copiers). Moreover, Lourentia was on the Board of the National Eisteddfod – Gauteng. She did English Curriculum Development for the Angolan Consulate in the Western Cape as their Cultural Attaché.

Lynne Manson

Maths, AP Maths

Lynne has taught Mathematics for 30 years. She has an MSc in Mathematics Education and has a love for teaching and learning Mathematics. She derives personal satisfaction from building good relationships with her students. Lynne has taught across various syllabi and curricula. She also teaches Advanced Programme Mathematics to Grade 10 to 12 students and has taught in a bridging programme from high school to university. She has tutored high school learners outside of the classroom over most of her teaching years and has helped many students to improve their marks. Lynne’s philosophy of learning Mathematics is: “People can learn Mathematics if they are able to make sense of their experiences of the concepts and patterns within. Aiding students in developing a growth mindset helps with the improvement of students’ beliefs about their abilities to solve problems and not be discouraged by wrong answers”. She loves it when her students have “AHA” moments!

Michael Germanus

I am currently studying towards a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science at Wits. I completed Matric in 2019, achieving 97% for Mathematics and distinctions in three other subjects including physics. My teaching philosophy is one that focuses on students’ conceptual understanding and developing their general study skills to equip them for future endeavours. I am passionate about Mathematics and teaching and I have read enough studies to conclude confidently that nearly any student can understand and appreciate Mathematics with the right guidance and mindset.

Missile Mkosha

Missile was born and raised in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He has obtained a Diploma in Education as well as an Honour’s degree in Applied Physics. He trained to be an engineer but instead opted to pursue teaching. He has always been passionate about teaching because of the way he has seen individual lives be touched and changed through education. In his free time, he enjoys playing darts and travelling.

Monique Slabbert

Monique is currently a third-year Psychology student at the University of South Africa. She will be doing her Honours in teaching next year. Her passion for teaching stems from her love for helping children reach their full potential. Her spare time is spent as a Troop Scouter at the 1st Discovery Scout Group where she works with young ladies to build character and develop their leadership skills. She has always had a passion for learning and believes that each new day is an opportunity to broaden your horizons. Her goal is to help as many students reach their goals as possible and create a love for learning!

Nicoleen Blignaut

Afrikaans

Nicoleen Blignaut has been a registered SACE member since 1980. She studied at the Goudstad Teachers’ Training College with a THED, an FDE and graduated in 2000 at the University of Johannesburg with a B.ED. Nicoleen has been teaching Economic Management Sciences, Creative Arts and Life Skills at various schools for 40 years, and over a period of three years also taught English in Oman, Muscat, Middle East. She is passionate about teaching and believes it is the most rewarding job.

Nina Schirmer

English

Nina is currently completing her Master’s degree at Wits University. When she was a teenager, her passion for education was ignited by helping out at a charity that provided extra lessons to children over weekends. While completing her Honours degree, she found it greatly rewarding to tutor second-year university students – it reminded her of this passion. Her love for reading is contagious, and she enjoys inspiring children to find joy in the activity. She has great research and essay-writing skills and has developed many useful study and research techniques that are helpful at any level of learning.

Sarah Coutlakis

Primary Level, TEFL, French, Portuguese

Sarah completed a BA Language degree at the University of Pretoria, with majors in French and Portuguese. Her love for languages has led her to spend time on language learning platforms, where she teaches others English and learns their languages in return. She enjoys many hobbies: dance (ballet, contemporary, and ballroom), sports (squash, hiking, and cycling), music, (violin, piano, guitalele and singing), creative writing, and many others. She also enjoys spending time with her cat, Fluffy. Sarah tutored French for the University of Pretoria and has completed her TEFL qualification. In 2018, she danced in a professional ballet company. She is also a qualified BASI Pilates teacher. She has a passion for languages and for helping people and finds teaching them extremely fulfilling and rewarding.

Simone Spyker

English, AP English

Simone studied English and Painting at Rhodes University and is passionate about seeing young people launched into their future destinies and reaching their full potential through discoveries in learning. She taught for several years in the Eastern Cape before moving back to the City of Gold and doesn’t miss the sea at all!  Her favourite pastimes include making an enormous mess of her kitchen while cooking lovely meals for friends and family and having interesting conversations about life, the universe and everything – particularly with her dog, Charlie, who, luckily, agrees with most of her ideas. Simone is fascinated by transformative learning, the link between language and embedded socio-cultural norms and the humanising potential of textual narratives. She agrees with JK Rowling who once said that words are “our most inexhaustible source of magic” and delights in creating opportunities for curiosity-driven learning. 

Tal Makahamadze

Mathematics, Physics

Tal Makahamadze is a youthful, fun, and energetic individual. He loves his numbers, and his calculator is his favourite device. He is currently studying a B.Sc. Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. He has experience in tutoring Mathematics and Physics up to AS and A level. Tal loves working with people and finds fulfilment in helping others improve their performance. He is target and goal-oriented and wants to help those around him find efficient ways to meet their targets. He is excited and passionate about the future of the Earth and spends some of his free time watching rugby, playing chess, and training in the gym.

Werner Otto

Accounting, Business Studies, Economics

Werner completed his PhD in Finance and pursued a career in tertiary education, expanding his research endeavours while also working as a researcher, publishing numerous academic articles in accredited journals. He has 10 years of experience working in this environment and has attained a holistic financial and business-management understanding. He believes that every individual should be judged according to their actions and firmly believes in the power of self will and resilience.
